There is a version of AI-assisted development going well right now. Teams are moving faster, tickets are getting closed, velocity is up. Leadership is pleased. And in six months, they will look at what shipped and realize none of it moved the metric that matters.
Speed without alignment is a precision instrument for waste. When development was slow, slowness was a forcing function. Long timelines meant stakeholders reviewed, questioned, and occasionally caught the fact that the spec described the wrong problem. Speed removes that friction. The feedback loop that existed because of slowness disappears.
This is not an argument for keeping development slow. It is an argument that AI adoption requires simultaneous investment in upstream clarity - not as a precondition that can be addressed later, but as the primary lever. If your organization ships feature requests that do not move user behavior, more speed makes that problem more expensive, not less. Every cycle saved in development is a cycle burned building something nobody needed faster than before.
The goal was never faster development. It was faster delivery of outcomes. Those are not the same thing, and AI does not bridge the gap.
